The Learning Path

Three traditional phases—from Mei Paadam body lessons to Tharai Paadam mobility and controlled Karlakattai club practice—guided by five essential pillars.

A considered progression

Prepare the Body Before the Club

The broader traditional training path begins with body lessons, continues through grounding and mobility, and only then expands into repeated club movements. Our original class labels (Mei Paadam, Basic Suttru and Advanced Suttru) fit within this progression.

01Foundation

Mei Paadam

Mei can refer to body or truth; Paadam to lesson. Rhythmic, geometric body movements build posture, balance, awareness and readiness for more complex training.

02Grounding & mobility

Tharai Paadam

Ground-based transitions, coordinated movement and mobility prepare learners to move steadily and confidently through different positions.

03Club technique

Karlakattai / Suttru

After foundational preparation, students practise controlled rotations, circular patterns and progressive combinations with a suitably sized wooden club.

What guides our practice

The Five Pillars

StrengthBuild movement capacity through steady progression
FlexibilityPractise comfortable, controlled ranges of motion
BalanceImprove body positioning and stability
StaminaDevelop familiarity with sustained, repeatable sequences
MobilityLink positions into fluid, deliberate transitions

The continued path

From Basic Suttru to Advanced Practice

Once a teacher confirms readiness, training can progress from simple circles and controlled tempo toward more continuous, multi-part sequences. The traditional idea of Unarvu—sensitivity or awareness—can guide the learner's attention as complexity increases.

Each stage should be adapted to the individual. Not every movement or club weight is suitable for all ages or physical abilities; instructional guidance and a comfortable training environment matter.

  • Understand the stance and grip before beginning circular movement
  • Progress gradually and practise evenly on both sides
  • Maintain clearance from people and objects around the club
  • Stop if movement causes pain or dizziness
